How Indian Festival Dates Are Decided
Most Hindu, Sikh and Jain festivals follow a lunisolar calendar, not the Gregorian one. A festival is fixed to a tithi (lunar day) in a Hindu month, so Holi is always on Phalguna Purnima and Diwali on Kartik Amavasya, but the English date moves by up to three weeks each year.
A few festivals follow the Sun instead of the Moon. Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Baisakhi and Vishu fall when the Sun enters a new zodiac sign, which is why they stay close to the same English date (mid-January and mid-April).
Islamic festivals follow a purely lunar calendar of about 354 days, so Eid moves about 11 days earlier every year. The exact day depends on when the new crescent moon is seen, which is why Eid in India can be a day after Eid in the Gulf.
Dates can also differ by region and by the time a tithi starts. When a tithi begins in the middle of a day, some calendars mark the festival that day and others the next. Always check your local panchang or temple, gurdwara or mosque for the final date. National days like Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti are fixed and never move.
