How Guru Nanak Jayanti Is Celebrated

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 at Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, now Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. By Sikh tradition his birth is marked on the full moon of the lunar month of Kartik, so the date changes every year. In 2026 it falls on 24 November, which makes it his 557th birth anniversary.

Celebrations usually begin two days early with an Akhand Path, a 48-hour non-stop reading of the Guru Granth Sahib. In the days before, early morning Prabhat Pheris go around the neighbourhood singing hymns, and a Nagar Kirtan procession, led by the Panj Pyare with the Nishan Sahib, carries the Guru Granth Sahib through the streets.

On the day itself gurdwaras hold kirtan from early morning, katha and ardas, and serve langar, a free community meal open to everyone, whatever their religion, caste or class. Homes and gurdwaras are lit with diyas and lights in the evening. Guru Nanak Jayanti is a public holiday in most Indian states.
