How Chinese New Year Is Celebrated

Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival (春节, Chūnjié), follows the lunar calendar, so the date moves each year between late January and mid February. It begins on the new moon, and in 2027 that is Saturday, 6 February. Each year is linked to one of 12 zodiac animals and one of five elements; 2027 is the Year of the Fire Goat.

The biggest moment is the reunion dinner on New Year's Eve (Friday, 5 February 2027), when families travel home to eat together. Dishes carry wishes: fish for plenty, dumplings for wealth and long noodles for long life. Before the festival, families clean the house to sweep away bad luck, and hang red lanterns, couplets and the character 福 (fú, good fortune) on the door.

On New Year's Day, elders and married couples give red envelopes of lucky money to children and younger relatives. Red is the colour of luck and is said to scare away bad fortune, which is also why there are firecrackers and lion dances. The celebrations last about two weeks and end with the Lantern Festival on the 15th day, which falls on Saturday, 20 February 2027.

Lunar New Year is not only Chinese. It is also celebrated as Tết in Vietnam and Seollal in Korea, and by communities in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and across the world, each with its own food and customs.
