ऐसा है हम सबका प्यारा मुरलीवाला। - राधा की पायल छनके, कान्हा की बंसी बोले,

बस तेरी भक्ति मिल जाए, कान्हा, मुझे आज।

Why Janmashtami Is Celebrated
Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. In Hindu tradition, he was born at midnight on the Ashtami (eighth day) of the waning moon in the month of Bhadrapada, inside King Kamsa's prison in Mathura, to Devaki and Vasudeva. That same night Vasudeva carried the baby across the Yamuna to Gokul, where Nanda and Yashoda raised him.
Most devotees fast through the day and hold the puja at midnight, the hour of his birth. Homes and temples set up a jhula (cradle) for Bal Gopal, bathe the idol, sing bhajans and offer makhan mishri and panjiri. In 2027, Drik Panchang lists the Nishita (midnight) puja for New Delhi from 12:01 AM to 12:45 AM on 26 August. Mathura and Vrindavan hold the biggest celebrations, and in the South the day is also called Gokulashtami.
Dahi Handi is held the next day, mainly in Maharashtra. Teams called Govinda pathaks build human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung high above the street, just as young Krishna and his friends climbed to reach the butter.
Smarta and Vaishnava dates match in 2027. Drik Panchang lists a single date, Wednesday 25 August, for both traditions, including ISKCON temples. Some local panchangs list 24 August, so check with your temple. See every festival of the year in our Indian festival calendar for 2027.
