Raksha Bandhan Quotes in English

For cards, gift tags and long WhatsApp messages to a brother or sister.

  • A rakhi is only a thread until a sister ties it. Then it becomes a promise that outlives every fight.
  • Raksha Bandhan is the one day a year we stop arguing long enough to admit we would be lost without each other.
  • The rakhi on his wrist fades by September. The bond it stands for never does.
  • Siblings do not keep score of who protected whom. They just keep showing up, year after year, rakhi after rakhi.
  • Some promises are signed on paper. The best one I know is tied with a thread on a full moon morning.
  • A sister's prayer and a brother's word: that is all Raksha Bandhan asks for, and it is more than enough.
  • The thali, the tilak, the sweets and the gift are all lovely. The real festival is the person standing in front of you.
  • We grew up sharing one room, one remote and one set of secrets. Rakhi is the day we remember that was a gift.
  • Protection is not only a brother's job. On Raksha Bandhan, every sibling promises to have the other's back.
  • Distance can change the address on the rakhi envelope. It cannot change who it is for.
  • A rakhi is small enough to fit in an envelope and strong enough to hold a lifetime of love.
  • Every knot in a rakhi carries a wish that the sister never says out loud.
  • Raksha Bandhan reminds us that the people who knew us at our silliest are the ones who love us most.
  • The thread is cotton and the colours are loud, but what it really holds is trust.
  • Childhood ends, homes change, cities change. The rakhi every Shravan says one thing stays the same.
  • You do not need a big gift on Raksha Bandhan. A phone call, an old memory and "I am here for you" are worth more.
  • Brothers and sisters fight like rivals and stand up for each other like soldiers. Rakhi celebrates both.
  • On this full moon, may every brother and sister feel what a rakhi really means: you are never alone.

Short Raksha Bandhan Quotes

One-liners for a quick text, a gift tag or the back of a rakhi card.

  • A thread from her, a promise from him.

  • We share a surname, a childhood and a fridge raid record.
  • A thread thin enough to break, a bond that never will.
  • My first friend gets the first rakhi.
  • The house is loud again. Rakhi brought everyone home.
  • A full moon and a brother finally on time.
  • Rakhi: the yearly contract nobody wants to cancel.
  • All fights paused till the sweets run out.
  • The strongest knot I know is on your wrist.
  • No bodyguard is as loyal as a brother on rakhi day.

4 Line Raksha Bandhan Shayari

Longer verses for a card, a reel voiceover or a status that needs more than two lines.

What Raksha Bandhan Means and How the Rakhi Is Tied

Raksha means protection and bandhan means bond. A sister ties a rakhi on her brother's wrist and prays for his long life, and the brother promises to stand by her. Today many sisters tie rakhis to each other, to cousins, to a bhabhi (the lumba rakhi) and even to soldiers at the border.

The festival falls on Shravan Purnima, the full moon of the Hindu month of Shravan. In 2027, Purnima tithi runs from 10:28 AM on Monday, August 16 to 12:58 PM on Tuesday, August 17. Drik Panchang gives the rakhi muhurat for New Delhi as 5:51 AM to 12:58 PM on August 17, and Bhadra is over before sunrise. Timings shift a few minutes by city, so check your local panchang.

How it is tied: the sister prepares a thali with roli, rice grains, a diya, the rakhi and sweets. She puts a tilak on her brother's forehead, does his aarti, ties the rakhi (usually on the right wrist), and feeds him a sweet. He gives her a gift and his word, and many families finish with a meal together.

Legends, as tradition tells them:

  • Krishna and Draupadi: when Krishna cut his finger, Draupadi tore a strip from her sari to bind it. He is said to have repaid that thread by protecting her honour in the Kaurava court.
  • Yama and Yamuna: Yamuna tied a thread on her brother Yama, the god of death, and he was so moved that, the story goes, he promised long life to every brother who wears his sister's rakhi.
  • Bali and Lakshmi: Goddess Lakshmi tied a raksha sutra on King Bali to bring Lord Vishnu home, which is why the rakhi mantra above names Bali.
  • Rani Karnavati and Humayun: the story says the Rani of Chittor sent Humayun a rakhi asking for help in 1535. Historians dispute it, since no contemporary source mentions the episode, so it is best told as a popular tale.

In 1905, when the British partition of Bengal took effect on 16 October, Rabindranath Tagore asked Hindus and Muslims to tie rakhis on each other as a sign of unity, turning the thread into a symbol of brotherhood beyond family.

Raksha Bandhan 2027 kab hai?
Raksha Bandhan 2027 is on Tuesday, August 17 (मंगलवार, 17 अगस्त). Purnima tithi starts at 10:28 AM on August 16 and ends at 12:58 PM on August 17.
What is the rakhi muhurat in 2027, and is there Bhadra?
Drik Panchang gives 5:51 AM to 12:58 PM on August 17 for New Delhi. Bhadra ends before sunrise, so you can tie the rakhi any time in that morning window.
What is the best quote for Raksha Bandhan?
The best one sounds like you. Pick a line that matches your sibling, such as an emotional shayari for a brother far away or a funny one for the sweets thief, and add one memory of your own.
How do I write a Raksha Bandhan status?
Keep it to one line, mention the rakhi or your sibling, and pair it with a photo. A short Hindi or English status from the lists above fits before the WhatsApp preview cuts off.
Which mantra is said while tying a rakhi?
The traditional raksha sutra mantra is येन बद्धो बलिराजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबल:, which asks the thread that bound King Bali to protect the wearer and stay firm. Many families simply tie the rakhi with a prayer instead.
Is the Humayun and Rani Karnavati rakhi story true?
It is a popular tale, but historians doubt it because no contemporary record of the 1535 siege mentions a rakhi. Treat it as tradition rather than history.
