Why Bhai Dooj Is Celebrated

Bhai Dooj falls on Dwitiya, the second day of the bright half of Kartik. It is the fifth and last day of Diwali, after Dhanteras, Choti Diwali, Diwali and Govardhan Puja.

The best-known story is of Yama and Yamuna. In Hindu tradition, Yama, the god of death, visited his sister Yamuna on this day. She welcomed him with a tilak and a meal, and he blessed her, which is why the day is also called Yama Dwitiya. Another story says Krishna visited his sister Subhadra after defeating Narakasura.

How it is celebrated. Sisters invite their brothers home, apply a tilak of roli and rice, do aarti and feed them sweets, praying for their long life. Brothers give a gift and a promise to stand by their sisters. For 2026, Drik Panchang (New Delhi) lists the tilak time as 1:10 PM to 3:20 PM on 11 November. Check your local panchang for exact timings.
