Why Choti Diwali Is Celebrated
Choti Diwali falls on Chaturdashi, the 14th day of the dark half of Kartik. It is the second day of the five-day festival, after Dhanteras.
The main story is Krishna's win over Narakasura. In Hindu tradition, Lord Krishna, with Satyabhama, defeated the demon king Narakasura and freed the people he had held captive. The day is remembered as a victory of light over darkness.
Traditions differ by region. Many families take an early oil bath (abhyanga snan) before sunrise, light a few diyas in the evening, and finish the Diwali cleaning. In Rajasthan it is Roop Chaudas, with ubtan and a special bath. In Gujarat, Kali Chaudas is observed on the night of the Chaturdashi.
A note on the 2026 date. The Chaturdashi tithi runs from the morning of 7 November to the morning of 8 November. So the evening lamps of Choti Diwali are on Saturday, 7 November, while Drik Panchang (New Delhi) places the Narak Chaturdashi oil bath at dawn on Sunday, 8 November, the same day as Lakshmi Puja. Check your local panchang for exact timings.
