Why Dhanteras Is Celebrated
Dhanteras is the first day of the five-day Diwali festival. It falls on Trayodashi, the 13th day of the dark half of the month of Kartik. The name joins "dhan" (wealth) and "teras" (thirteenth).
It is also Dhanvantari Jayanti. In Hindu tradition, Lord Dhanvantari rose from the churning of the ocean holding a pot of amrit, and he is seen as the god of Ayurveda and health.
Buying something new is a tradition. Many families buy utensils, a broom, or a small gold or silver item on this day as a sign of a fresh start. It is a custom, not a promise of money, and a simple steel spoon keeps the tradition just as well. In the evening, families clean the house, light diyas and do Lakshmi and Kuber puja. Many also light a lamp for Yama, the god of death, facing south, as a prayer for the family's long life.
