The 5 Days of Diwali in 2026 📅

Diwali is a five-day festival. Here are the dates for 2026 (New Delhi panchang; your city may differ by a day).

DayFestivalDate in 2026
Day 1DhanterasFriday, 6 November
Day 2Choti Diwali (Naraka Chaturdashi)Saturday, 7 November

In 2026 there is a gap day on Monday, 9 November between Lakshmi Puja and Govardhan Puja, and many panchangs keep the Naraka Chaturdashi holy bath (Abhyanga Snan) at dawn on 8 November. Check your local panchang for puja timings.

Why We Celebrate Diwali

Diwali, or Deepavali, means a row of lamps. By tradition, the people of Ayodhya lit lamps to welcome Lord Rama home after 14 years of exile and his victory over Ravana. On the new moon night, families clean their homes, draw rangoli, light diyas and worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha for prosperity and wisdom.

The festival is also special for other faiths: Jains mark the nirvana of Lord Mahavira, and Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas. Whatever your reason, the heart of it is the same: light over darkness, and time with the people you love.

When is Diwali in 2026?
Diwali 2026 is on Sunday, 8 November, with Lakshmi Puja in the evening. The five-day festival runs from Dhanteras on 6 November to Bhai Dooj on 11 November.
What is the best message for Diwali?
The best Diwali message is short, warm and personal. Add the person's name and one line about them, like a memory or a thank you, to any wish above.
How do you say Happy Diwali in Hindi?
Say शुभ दीपावली (Shubh Deepavali) or दीपावली की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ (Deepavali ki hardik shubhkamnayein), which means heartfelt Diwali wishes.
How do you wish Diwali to your boss or clients?
Keep it formal and short: wish them and their family a happy and prosperous Diwali, and thank them for their guidance or trust this year. Skip jokes and slang.
Which Sanskrit shloka is said while lighting a diya?
The most common one is Shubham karoti kalyanam arogyam dhanasampada, a prayer to the lamp's light for good fortune, health and wealth.
Is it Diwali or Deepavali?
Both are correct. Deepavali is the Sanskrit name, meaning a row of lamps, and Diwali is the shorter everyday form used across North India.
