Why Onam Is Celebrated

Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala, celebrated in Chingam, the first month of the Malayalam calendar, when the Thiruvonam star is in the sky. In 2027 the ten days run from Atham on Friday, 3 September to Thiruvonam on Sunday, 12 September.

By popular tradition, Onam marks the yearly homecoming of King Mahabali, a generous ruler under whom Kerala had no poverty and no deceit. The story goes that Lord Vishnu came as Vamana, a young Brahmin, and asked the king for three steps of land. Mahabali agreed, Vamana grew to cover the earth and the sky, and the king offered his own head for the third step. Moved by his humility, he was allowed to visit his people once a year, and Onam is that visit.

  • Pookalam: a flower carpet at the doorstep. It starts small on Atham and grows a ring bigger each day until Thiruvonam.
  • Onasadya: the vegetarian feast on a banana leaf. It is served in courses and can have more than two dozen dishes, ending with payasam.
  • Vallam kali: snake boat races on the rivers and backwaters, with Aranmula one of the best known. Teams of rowers row to the beat of boat songs.
  • More customs: new clothes (Onakkodi), swings, the Thiruvathira dance and Pulikali, the tiger dance of Thrissur.

Onam was declared Kerala's state festival in 1961, and today it is celebrated by Malayalis of every faith, in Kerala and around the world. Like Pongal in Tamil Nadu, it is a thank you for the harvest. For other festival dates this year, see the Indian festival calendar.

When is Onam in 2027?
Thiruvonam, the main Onam day, is on Sunday, 12 September 2027. The ten-day festival begins on Atham, Friday, 3 September.
How do you wish Happy Onam in Malayalam?
