Why Pongal Is Celebrated

Pongal is a four-day harvest festival, mostly celebrated in Tamil Nadu and by Tamil communities around the world. The name comes from the Tamil word for "to boil over". It marks the month of Thai, when the Sun begins its northward journey (Uttarayana) and the harvest is in.

  • Bhogi (14 January 2027): homes are cleaned and old things are burnt in a bonfire, a sign of new beginnings.
  • Thai Pongal (15 January 2027): the main day. Fresh rice is cooked with milk and jaggery in a new clay pot, often outdoors, facing the rising Sun. When the pot boils over, everyone shouts "Pongalo Pongal!" It is offered to Surya, the Sun god, in thanks.
  • Mattu Pongal (16 January 2027): cattle are bathed, decorated and thanked for their work on the farm.
  • Kaanum Pongal (17 January 2027): families and friends meet, visit and share food. It is also a day when many sisters pray for their brothers.

Homes are decorated with kolam (rice flour designs), mango leaves and sugarcane, and turmeric plants are tied around the pot. The same time of year is marked as Makar Sankranti in other parts of India and as Lohri in Punjab. See Makar Sankranti wishes and Lohri wishes.
