Why We Celebrate Makar Sankranti
Makar Sankranti marks the day the Sun enters Makara rashi (Capricorn) in the sidereal zodiac. It starts Uttarayana, the Sun's six-month journey north, which tradition treats as an auspicious time. Unlike most Hindu festivals, it follows the solar calendar, so it lands on 14 or 15 January almost every year.
In 2027 the Sankranti moment is 9:14 PM on Thursday, 14 January (New Delhi, Drik Panchang). Because it falls after sunset, the Punya Kaal for the holy bath, prayers to Surya Dev and daan moves to Friday, 15 January, from 7:15 AM to 5:46 PM. Some calendars and holiday lists still show 14 January, and in Gujarat kite flying often spans both days, so check your local panchang.
People take a dip in holy rivers, eat and share til (sesame) and gud (jaggery), give food and warm clothes to those in need, and fly kites. The same Sankranti goes by many names:
| Region | Festival | What stands out |
|---|---|---|
| Gujarat | Uttarayan | Kite flying from dawn to night, undhiyu and chikki |
| Maharashtra | Makar Sankranti | Tilgul and "tilgul ghya, god god bola", haldi-kunku |
| Tamil Nadu | Pongal | Bhogi on 14 Jan, Thai Pongal on 15 Jan, Mattu Pongal on 16 Jan, Kaanum Pongal on 17 Jan (2027) |
| Assam | Magh Bihu (Bhogali Bihu) | Uruka night feast, the Meji bonfire next morning |
| Uttar Pradesh and Bihar | Khichdi | Khichdi eaten and given as daan, dahi-chura in Bihar |
| Karnataka | Sankranti | Ellu bella shared with "ellu bella tindu olle maatadi" |
| Punjab | Maghi | Comes right after Lohri, the bonfire night |
Whatever it is called where you live, the idea is the same: thank the Sun for the harvest, share something sweet and speak kindly.
