How Chhath Puja Is Celebrated

Chhath Puja is celebrated on the Shashthi (sixth day) of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik, about a week after Diwali. It is the biggest festival of Bihar and is also kept in Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Madhesh region of Nepal, and by families from these places across India and abroad.

The four days follow a set order. On Nahay Khay devotees bathe in a river or pond and eat one simple meal. On Kharna they fast all day and break it in the evening with gur ki kheer and roti. After Kharna, vratis traditionally keep a nirjala fast of about 36 hours. On the third evening families go to the ghat to offer Sandhya Arghya to the setting sun, and on the fourth morning they offer Usha Arghya to the rising sun before breaking the fast.

Offerings are carried in bamboo soop and daura baskets, with thekua, fruit, sugarcane and coconut. Exact sunrise and sunset times vary by city, so check a local panchang for your arghya time.
