Day 1: Maa Shailputri, Orange (11 October)

Maa Shailputri is the daughter of the mountain king Himavat and a form of Maa Parvati. She rides a bull and holds a trident and a lotus. Day 1 is also the day of Ghatasthapana, when the kalash is set up at home.

Maa Siddhidatri is the giver of siddhis, or spiritual powers and wisdom. She sits on a lotus and is the last of the nine forms, worshipped on Maha Navami. Vijayadashami (Dussehra) follows on Tuesday, 20 October.

How Navratri Colours Are Decided

The colour of Day 1 follows the weekday Navratri starts on, then the list runs in a set order. The weekday colours are Sunday orange, Monday white, Tuesday red, Wednesday royal blue, Thursday yellow, Friday green and Saturday grey. Nine days need two more colours, so purple and peacock green close the list.

That is why the list moves every year. In 2026 Navratri begins on a Sunday, so it starts with orange. The colour tradition is most popular in Maharashtra and Gujarat, and it is a custom, not a rule of the puja. Wear what you have and what makes you feel festive.
