Why We Celebrate Republic Day

India became free on 15 August 1947, but it was still using laws from the British era. The Constituent Assembly, with Dr. B. R. Ambedkar as chair of the drafting committee, wrote a new Constitution. It was adopted on 26 November 1949 (now marked as Constitution Day) and came into force on 26 January 1950. That is the day India became a sovereign democratic republic, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad became its first President.

The date was chosen on purpose. In the Lahore session of December 1929, the Congress called for Purna Swaraj (complete independence), and 26 January 1930 was marked across the country as the day of that pledge.

How it is marked: the President unfurls the national flag in New Delhi, and a grand parade moves down Kartavya Path (earlier called Rajpath) with marching contingents of the armed forces, state tableaux, school children and a flypast. Every year a foreign head of state or government is invited as the chief guest; the guest for 2027 is announced by the government closer to the day. Bravery and gallantry awards are also honoured around the day. The celebrations formally end with the Beating Retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk on the evening of 29 January, where military bands play as the sun sets.

Republic Day vs Independence Day: Independence Day (15 August) marks freedom from British rule in 1947, and the Prime Minister hoists the flag at the Red Fort. Republic Day (26 January) marks the Constitution coming into force in 1950, and the President unfurls the flag at Kartavya Path.
