"Akshaya" means never diminishing. The festival falls on Tritiya, the third lunar day of the bright half of Vaishakha, and it is believed that good deeds, prayers and gifts made on this day keep bearing fruit. In Rajasthan, Gujarat and nearby states it is also called Akha Teej.
It is a day for new beginnings. Many families pick it for weddings, griha pravesh, starting a business or a first day at work. It is also a popular day to buy gold or silver, as a sign of lasting blessings. This is a tradition, not financial advice, and a small coin or even a new utensil keeps the custom just as well.
Charity matters as much as buying. People donate food, water, clothes or money, visit temples and worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Hindu tradition also links the day to the birth of Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, and to the descent of the Ganga to earth.
