Why Baisakhi Is Celebrated

Baisakhi, also spelled Vaisakhi, is the first day of the month of Vaisakh in the solar calendar, when the sun enters Mesha (Aries). In 2027 the Mesha Sankranti moment is 3:33 PM IST on Wednesday, 14 April (Drik Panchang, New Delhi). In most years Baisakhi falls on 13 or 14 April. Unlike most Sikh dates, it follows the traditional solar Bikrami calendar.

It is the harvest festival of Punjab. By mid-April the rabi crop, mainly wheat, is ready to cut, and farming families celebrate the reward of a winter of work. Villages hold melas with food stalls, rides, bhangra and gidha.

For Sikhs, it is Khalsa Sajna Diwas. On Vaisakhi in 1699, at Anandpur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh Ji called the sangat together and asked who was ready to give their head for the faith. Five men came forward one by one. They were given amrit and became the Panj Pyare, the five beloved ones, and the first members of the Khalsa. Sikh tradition gives the Khalsa the five Ks (kesh, kangha, kara, kachera and kirpan), and a life of courage, discipline, service and equality.

How it is marked today. Sikh families visit the gurdwara for kirtan, ardas and langar, and many towns hold a nagar kirtan procession. Big gatherings take place at Anandpur Sahib, Takht Sri Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo, and the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Many people also take amrit on this day.

A day of remembrance too. On Baisakhi, 13 April 1919, British troops under General Dyer fired on an unarmed crowd at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, killing hundreds of people. Many people remember the victims on this day.

When is Baisakhi in 2027?
Baisakhi 2027 is on Wednesday, 14 April. The Mesha Sankranti moment, when the sun enters Aries, is at 3:33 PM IST as per Drik Panchang for New Delhi.
Why is Baisakhi celebrated?
Baisakhi celebrates the wheat harvest in Punjab and the start of the solar new year. For Sikhs it also marks Khalsa Sajna Diwas, the day Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib in 1699.
How do you wish Happy Baisakhi in Punjabi?
Say "Vaisakhi diyan lakh lakh vadhaiyan", which means a hundred thousand congratulations on Vaisakhi. In Gurmukhi it is written ਵਿਸਾਖੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੱਖ ਲੱਖ ਵਧਾਈਆਂ.
Are Baisakhi and Vaisakhi the same?
Yes. Baisakhi and Vaisakhi are two spellings of the same festival. Vaisakhi is closer to the Punjabi name, and Baisakhi is common in Hindi.
What is Khalsa Sajna Diwas?
Khalsa Sajna Diwas is the day the Khalsa was created. Sikhs mark it on Vaisakhi, in memory of 1699, when Guru Gobind Singh Ji gave amrit to the Panj Pyare at Anandpur Sahib.
Is Baisakhi a new year?
Yes. Baisakhi is the first day of Vaisakh, the start of the solar new year in Punjab. Vishu, Puthandu, Bohag Bihu and Pohela Boishakh welcome the same solar new year in other states.
What food is made on Baisakhi?
Many families make meethe chawal, kheer, kadhi chawal or chole bhature, and gurdwaras serve langar and kadah prasad. Lassi and jalebis are mela favourites.
