Holi 2027 Date: Holika Dahan and Rangwali Holi 📅

Holi falls on Phalguna Purnima, the full moon of the Hindu month of Phalguna. In 2027 the dates are (Drik Panchang, New Delhi):

DayFestivalDate in 2027
EveningHolika Dahan (Chhoti Holi)Sunday, 21 March
Next dayRangwali Holi (Dhulandi, Dhuleti)Monday, 22 March

Drik Panchang gives the Holika Dahan muhurat in New Delhi as 6:33 pm to 8:55 pm on 21 March. Some panchangs and cities mark Holika Dahan on 22 March and play colours on Tuesday, 23 March, so check your local calendar or temple.

Why We Celebrate Holika Dahan and Holi

Holika Dahan remembers young Prahlad, a devotee of Lord Vishnu. His father, the demon king Hiranyakashipu, asked his sister Holika to sit in a fire with Prahlad on her lap, because she could not be burned. Holika burned and Prahlad walked out safe. So on the full moon evening, families light a bonfire, pray, walk around it and roast new grain, as a sign of good winning over evil.

The next morning is Rangwali Holi, the day of colours. In Braj (Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana) it celebrates the playful love of Radha and Krishna, and Barsana is known for its Lathmar Holi. Across India, Holi also marks the arrival of spring, and it is a day to forgive old fights, visit friends and share gujiya and thandai.

When is Holi in 2027?
Holi 2027, the day of colours, is on Monday, 22 March, as per Drik Panchang for New Delhi. Holika Dahan is on the evening of Sunday, 21 March. Some local panchangs shift both by a day, to 22 and 23 March.
What is the best message for Holi?
A short, warm wish with the person's name works best, like: Happy Holi! May the colours you play with today stay in your life all year long. Add one personal line, such as a Holi memory you share.
How do you say Happy Holi in Hindi?
Say होली की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ (Holi ki hardik shubhkamnayein), which means heartfelt Holi wishes. Among friends, हैप्पी होली or होली मुबारक is also common.
What do you say on Holika Dahan?
Say Happy Holika Dahan or होलिका दहन की शुभकामनाएँ, and wish that the holy fire burns away the person's troubles. It is a prayerful evening, so keep the wish warm and simple.
Why is Holi celebrated?
Holi celebrates the victory of good over evil, from the story of Prahlad and Holika, and the playful love of Radha and Krishna. It also welcomes spring and is a day to forgive and start fresh.
Is it okay to wish Happy Holi if I am not Hindu?
Yes. Holi is known for bringing everyone together, and a friendly Happy Holi is always welcome. If you join in, ask before putting colour on anyone.
