Why We Mark International Women's Day

International Women's Day grew out of labour and women's rights movements in the early 1900s. The Socialist Party of America held a National Woman's Day in New York on February 28, 1909. In 1910, at a women's conference in Copenhagen, Clara Zetkin and other German delegates proposed a yearly Women's Day, and on March 19, 1911, more than a million people marked the first one in Austria-Hungary, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

The date settled on March 8 over the next few years. On March 8, 1917, women workers in Petrograd went on strike for "Bread and Peace", which helped spark the Russian Revolution. The United Nations began celebrating the day in 1975, during International Women's Year, and in 1977 the UN General Assembly invited countries to mark a day for women's rights and world peace.

Each year the UN picks a theme. The 2026 theme was "Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls." The 2027 theme is usually announced in early 2027, before March. People mark the day with events at work and school, rallies, talks, and by wearing purple. It is a public holiday in some countries, but not in India, the US or the UK. For other big days of the year, see our special days calendar, and for her birthday, pick from our birthday wishes for mom and birthday wishes for sister.
