What Is Cinco de Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo marks the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when a smaller, poorly equipped Mexican army led by General Ignacio Zaragoza beat a larger French force near the city of Puebla. France had invaded after Mexico paused payments on its foreign debt. The French came back a year later and took Mexico City, but the win at Puebla became a lasting symbol of courage and resistance.

It is not Mexican Independence Day. That falls on September 16 and marks the start of Mexico's fight for independence from Spain in 1810. It is the biggest national holiday in Mexico.

Cinco de Mayo is bigger in the US than in Mexico. In Mexico it is marked mostly with parades and battle reenactments, especially in Puebla. In the US it grew into a celebration of Mexican-American culture, with festivals, folklórico dancing, mariachi music and plenty of food.
