Irish Toasts and Blessings

These are traditional Irish blessings and toasts, passed down and shared at weddings, parties and farewells. Use them as captions or raise a glass (of anything) with them. For wise old sayings, see our Irish proverbs and sayings.

  • May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
  • May the roof above us never fall in, and may the friends gathered below it never fall out.
  • May you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live.
  • May your home always be too small to hold all your friends.
  • May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past.
  • May the Irish hills caress you. May her lakes and rivers bless you. May the luck of the Irish enfold you. May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.
  • May you always have walls for the winds, a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire, laughter to cheer you, those you love near you, and all your heart might desire.
  • May your troubles be less and your blessings be more, and nothing but happiness come through your door.
  • May God grant you always a sunbeam to warm you, a moonbeam to charm you, and a sheltering angel so nothing can harm you.
  • May your glass be ever full. May the roof over your head be always strong. And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.
  • Here's to the land of the shamrock so green. Here's to each lad and his darlin' colleen. Here's to the ones we love dearest and most. May God bless old Ireland, that's this Irishman's toast!
  • May the luck of the Irish lead to happiest heights, and the highway you travel be lined with green lights.
  • May the hinges of our friendship never grow rusty.
  • There are good ships and there are wood ships, the ships that sail the sea. But the best ships are friendships, and may they always be.

Who Was St. Patrick?

Saint Patrick was a 5th century Christian missionary and is the patron saint of Ireland. He was born in Roman Britain, taken to Ireland as a teenager by raiders, escaped, and later came back to spread Christianity across the island.

March 17 is the traditional date of his death, which is why the feast day falls on it. In Ireland it is a public holiday with church services, parades and family gatherings. Around the world, cities host parades, wear green and light up landmarks in green.

The shamrock is linked to Patrick through the legend that he used its three leaves to explain the Holy Trinity. That is why the three-leaf shamrock, not the rare four-leaf clover, is the true symbol of the day.
