What Bakrid Marks and How It Is Celebrated 🕌

Eid al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice, falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. In India it is also called Bakrid, Bakra Eid or Eid-ul-Zuha. It comes the day after the Day of Arafah, while pilgrims are performing Hajj in and around Makkah.

  • The story: the festival remembers Prophet Ibrahim's readiness to sacrifice his son (Ismail, in Islamic tradition) when Allah commanded it. Allah spared the son and ransomed him with a great sacrifice (Quran 37:107). The lesson is complete trust in Allah.
  • Eid prayer: the day begins with a congregational prayer at a mosque or Eidgah, with the takbir said aloud.
  • Qurbani: families who can afford it offer an animal sacrifice (qurbani) during the days of Eid. The meat is traditionally shared in three parts: one for the household, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor. This split is recommended, not compulsory.
  • Sharing and visits: people visit relatives and neighbours, host dawat, and make sure the needy have food on Eid.

Eid al-Adha is different from Eid al-Fitr, which ends Ramadan about two months earlier. See all 2027 dates in our Indian festival calendar.

When is Bakrid in 2027?
Bakrid 2027 is expected in India on Monday, 17 May 2027. Saudi Arabia may mark it on Sunday, 16 May. The final date is set only after the Dhul Hijjah moon is sighted.
Do we say Eid Mubarak on Bakrid?
Yes. Eid Mubarak means blessed festival and is used on both Eids. You can also say Bakrid Mubarak or Eid al-Adha Mubarak.
What is the reply to Bakrid Mubarak?
In India and Pakistan the usual reply is Khair Mubarak. You can also say Eid Mubarak to you too, or Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum, which means may Allah accept from us and from you.
How do you wish someone on Bakrid?
Say Bakrid Mubarak or Eid al-Adha Mubarak and add a short dua, like may Allah accept your qurbani and prayers. A personal line with their name makes it warmer.
Can non-Muslims wish Bakrid Mubarak?
Yes. Muslim friends, neighbours and colleagues are usually happy to hear Bakrid Mubarak or Happy Eid from anyone. Keep it simple and sincere.
What is the significance of qurbani on Bakrid?
Qurbani remembers Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to give up what he loved for Allah. The meat is shared with family, friends and the poor, so the festival reaches everyone.
What is the difference between Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha?
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan fasting. Eid al-Adha, or Bakrid, comes about two months later during Hajj and remembers Prophet Ibrahim's sacrifice.
