How Valentine's Day is marked

February 14 is the feast day of St Valentine, an early Christian martyr. The day's link with romance goes back to the poet Chaucer in the 14th century, and handwritten love notes grew popular in England in the 1700s. Printed cards later spread the custom to the US and the rest of the world.

Today it looks different from place to place. In India, many couples celebrate the whole Valentine week, from Rose Day to Kiss Day. In Japan women give chocolate, in Finland it is a day for friends, and in Wales lovers also have St Dwynwen's Day in January. Want more to share on the day?
