Where these come from: Washington wrote the first line to the New York Provincial Congress in 1775 (it is carved at Arlington's Memorial Amphitheater). Lincoln's is from his Second Inaugural Address in 1865 and later became the VA's motto. Eisenhower's is from the first Veterans Day proclamation in 1954, Kennedy's first two lines from his Veterans Day remarks at Arlington in 1961 and the third from his 1963 Thanksgiving proclamation. Reagan spoke the first two in Normandy on the 40th anniversary of D-Day in 1984 and wrote the third to a young Marine in 1983. Obama's lines are from his Veterans Day remarks in 2009 and 2016.

Veterans Day vs Memorial Day

The two days are easy to mix up, but they mean different things. Veterans Day honors everyone who has served in the US military, living or dead. Memorial Day honors those who died while serving, and it falls on the last Monday in May.

That is why "thank you for your service" fits Veterans Day, while Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for the fallen. Veterans Day is always on November 11, the date the World War I armistice took effect in 1918. It began as Armistice Day in 1919, was renamed Veterans Day in 1954, and returned to November 11 in 1978 after a few years on a Monday in October.
