Why some people avoid "Happy Memorial Day": for Gold Star families and many veterans, it is a day of grief, not celebration. A cheerful "Happy Memorial Day" or a sale post can feel out of place. Words like "remember," "honor" and "meaningful" fit better, and "thank you for your service" is better saved for Veterans Day, which honors living veterans.

Memorial Day Poems
Poems that are in the public domain and free to share, each credited to its poet. "In Flanders Fields" is why the red poppy is a symbol of remembrance.
In Flanders Fields by John McCrae (1915)
In Flanders fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
John McCrae
We Shall Keep the Faith by Moina Michael (1918), the closing stanza. Michael, the "Poppy Lady," wrote it in reply to McCrae and started the custom of wearing red poppies in the US.
And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields.
Moina Michael
Short stanzas from Laurence Binyon's "For the Fallen" (1914) and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Decoration Day" (1882).
- They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.Laurence Binyon - Sleep, comrades, sleep and rest
On this Field of the Grounded Arms,
Where foes no more molest,
Nor sentry's shot alarms!Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - Your silent tents of green
We deck with fragrant flowers;
Yours has the suffering been,
The memory shall be ours.Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

How Memorial Day Is Marked
Memorial Day is a US federal holiday on the last Monday of May that honors those who died while serving in the armed forces. It grew out of the Civil War, when communities in the North and South decorated soldiers' graves with flowers each spring, so it was first called Decoration Day.
On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, head of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued General Order No. 11, which set May 30, 1868, as a day for decorating the graves of the war dead. The first national observance took place at Arlington National Cemetery that day. Under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968, which took effect in 1971, Memorial Day moved to the last Monday in May and became a federal holiday.
Memorial Day is not the same as Veterans Day. Memorial Day remembers those who died in service. Veterans Day, on November 11, thanks everyone who served, living or dead.
Common ways to mark it:
- The National Moment of Remembrance at 3 pm local time, a one-minute pause set by Congress in 2000.
- Flying the flag at half-staff until noon, then raising it to full staff.
- Visiting cemeteries and memorials, and placing flags or flowers on graves.
- Wearing a red poppy, a custom that comes from "In Flanders Fields" and Moina Michael.
- Parades, wreath layings and the playing of Taps, including the national ceremony at Arlington.
For other US days through the year, see our special days calendar. To thank living veterans in November, use our Veterans Day quotes.
