What Hanukkah Means and How It Is Celebrated
Hanukkah (also spelled Chanukah; both are transliterations of the same Hebrew word) means "dedication". It remembers the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd century BCE, after a small Jewish group led by Judah Maccabee, known as the Maccabees, won a revolt against the Seleucid Greek king Antiochus IV. Jewish tradition, recorded in the Talmud, tells that a single jar of pure oil, enough for one day, kept the Temple lamp burning for eight days. That is why the festival lasts eight nights.
Each evening, families light the menorah, also called a hanukkiah. It holds eight candles plus a helper candle, the shamash, used to light the others. One more candle is added each night until all eight burn on the last night. In 2026, the first night falls on a Friday, so by tradition the Hanukkah candles are lit before the Shabbat candles that evening.
Because the miracle story is about oil, foods fried in oil are a tradition: latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jam-filled doughnuts). Children play with the dreidel, a four-sided spinning top whose Hebrew letters stand for "a great miracle happened there", and often play for gelt, coins or chocolate coins.
Common greetings: "Happy Hanukkah" works for everyone. "Chag Sameach" (KHAG sah-MAY-akh) is Hebrew for "happy holiday", and "Chag Urim Sameach" means "happy Festival of Lights". In religious terms Hanukkah is a minor festival, but it is one of the best-loved, and a warm wish is always welcome.
