Leadership Quotes for a Boss's Day Card 📖

Real words from leaders and writers, checked against the original book or speech. Write one inside the card, then add your own line of thanks.

  • The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between the two, the leader must become a servant and a debtor.Max De Pree
  • You manage things, you lead people. We went overboard on management and forgot about leadership.Grace Hopper
  • Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do, and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.George S. Patton
  • Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand.John C. Maxwell
  • Successful people become great leaders when they learn to shift the focus from themselves to others.Marshall Goldsmith
  • You cannot be a leader, and ask other people to follow you, unless you know how to follow, too.Sam Rayburn
  • Leadership is rooted not in power and authority, but in service and wisdom.Robin Wall Kimmerer
  • Leadership is the art of accomplishing more than the science of management says is possible.Colin Powell
  • If you command wisely, you'll be obeyed cheerfully.Thomas Fuller

Where these come from: De Pree's line is from Leadership Is an Art (1989). Hopper said hers in an interview quoted in "The Wit and Wisdom of Grace Hopper" (OCLC Newsletter, 1987). Patton's is from War As I Knew It (1947), Maxwell's is a chapter title in Josh McDowell's Youth Ministry Handbook (2000), and Goldsmith's is from What Got You Here Won't Get You There. Rayburn's is from a 1961 House tribute, Kimmerer's from Braiding Sweetgrass (2013), Powell's from The Powell Principles (2003) and Fuller's from Gnomologia (1732).

What Is Boss's Day?

National Boss's Day is October 16 every year in the US, or the nearest working day when the 16th falls on a weekend. In 2026 it is a Friday, so most offices will mark it on the day itself.

It started in 1958, when Patricia Bays Haroski, a secretary at State Farm Insurance in Deerfield, Illinois, registered the day with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. She picked October 16 because it was her father's birthday, and he was also her boss. In 1962 Illinois Governor Otto Kerner backed the idea with a proclamation, and over the years it spread to offices across the country.

Boss's Day Etiquette

Keep it small and sincere. A card or a short message is enough. Boss's Day is about saying thank you, not about winning favor.

Give as a group, not alone. If your team wants to give something, sign one card together or chip in for a team lunch, coffee or snacks. A pricey gift from one person can feel awkward for everyone.

Mention one real thing. "Thank you for helping me with the client pitch" means more than any big compliment.

Skip personal gifts. Clothes, perfume, alcohol and anything too personal do not belong at work. If your office does not usually mark the day, a kind note is still welcome, and so is doing nothing at all.

For a remote boss, an e-card signed by the team or a short thank-you round at the start of a call works just as well.

If the same manager is on your list in the holiday season, our Thanksgiving messages and Christmas card messages both have sections for your boss and coworkers.

When is National Boss's Day 2026?
National Boss's Day 2026 is on Friday, October 16. In the US it is marked on October 16 each year, or on the nearest working day when that date falls on a weekend.
Is it Boss Day, Boss's Day or Bosses Day?
The official name is National Boss's Day, with an apostrophe and an s. Boss Day and Bosses Day are common too, and everyone will understand what you mean.
What do you write in a Boss's Day card?
Start with 'Happy Boss's Day,' thank your boss for one specific thing they did, and close with a sign-off like 'With thanks and respect.' Two or three sentences are enough.
How do you write a Boss's Day message from the whole team?
Write one shared line such as 'Happy Boss's Day from the whole team, thank you for leading us through a great year,' then let each person add their name or one short line of their own.
Should you give your boss a gift on Boss's Day?
A gift is not expected. A card or a kind message is enough, and if your team wants to do more, a group gift like a team lunch or coffee is better than a gift from one person.
