Red Rose Meaning

A red rose means romantic love. It is the color most people mean when they ask what rose represents love. The rose has stood for love since ancient Greece, where it was linked with Aphrodite, the goddess of love.

  • Bright red: romance and passion. The classic Valentine's Day rose.
  • Burgundy or deep red: a deeper, more serious love. Victorian flower books even read deep red as a shy, blushing feeling.
  • Red rosebud: young love that is still growing.

Give red to a partner, spouse or someone you are ready to say "I love you" to. Avoid it for a friend or a boss unless you want to send mixed signals.

Pink Rose Meaning

Pink roses mean admiration, gratitude and gentle affection. Pink is softer than red, which makes it the safest choice when you like someone but it is still early. Florists read the shades a little differently:

Pink shadeMeaningGood for
Light or pale pinkGrace, gentleness, sympathyA crush, a new mom, condolences
Medium pinkThanks, sweetness, all-round warmthAlmost any occasion
Dark pinkDeep gratitude and appreciationParents, mentors, a big thank-you
Hot pinkPlayful love, excitementSomeone you are falling for

So if you search "pink rose meaning from a guy," the honest answer is: it depends on the shade and the note. Light pink usually says "I admire you." Hot pink leans flirty.

White Rose Meaning

A white rose means a new beginning, purity and respect. That is why it shows up in bridal bouquets and also at funerals: both mark a big new chapter.

Give white roses for a wedding, a christening, a sympathy visit or to say sorry and start fresh. Ivory and cream roses sit close to white but feel warmer, so they suit anniversaries and weddings that want something softer than pure white.

Yellow Rose Meaning

Today a yellow rose means friendship, joy and care. It is the go-to rose for a best friend, a get-well-soon visit or a congratulations.

It was not always so friendly. Kate Greenaway's 1884 Language of Flowers lists the yellow rose as "decrease of love" and jealousy. That meaning has faded, but if you are giving yellow to a partner, add a note so it reads as sunshine, not a warning.

Orange, Peach and Coral Rose Meanings

These warm colors sit between friendship and romance.

  • Orange rose: energy, excitement and enthusiasm. Great for celebrating a new job, results or a big win. In a romantic bouquet it says "I'm excited about us."
  • Peach rose: thanks and sincerity. A quiet, modest color that suits teachers, parents and anyone who helped you.
  • Coral rose: desire and warm admiration. A step bolder than peach, often given early in dating.

Lavender and Purple Rose Meanings

A lavender rose means enchantment and love at first sight. It is the rose for someone who caught your eye the moment you met.

Deeper purple roses carry the old royal link of the color: admiration, majesty and a sense of wonder. Give purple to someone you look up to.

Blue and Black Rose Meanings

True blue and true black roses do not grow in nature. Keep this in mind before you pay extra for one.

  • Blue rose: roses lack delphinidin, the pigment that makes some flowers blue. The bright blue roses in shops are white roses that have been dyed. In 2004 Suntory and Florigene made a genetically modified "Applause" rose with that blue pigment, but it blooms lavender-mauve, not sky blue. Because a blue rose was long thought impossible, it stands for mystery and the unattainable.
  • Black rose: "black" varieties such as Black Baccara are really a very dark red or maroon that looks black in low light. Jet-black roses are dyed or spray-painted. A black rose means farewell, mourning or the end of one chapter and the start of another. It is not a romantic gift for most people.

Green, Rainbow and Bicolor Rose Meanings

  • Green rose: growth, renewal and good luck. Real green roses do exist: the old Green Rose (Rosa chinensis 'Viridiflora') has green "petals" that are really leaf-like sepals. Most green roses at florists are pale green-white hybrids. Good for a new home, a new baby or a new business.
  • Rainbow rose: joy and celebration. Rainbow roses are white roses whose split stems drink different dyes, a method Dutch grower Peter van de Werken made popular in the 2000s. Fun for birthdays and Pride.
  • Bicolor rose: each color adds its own meaning. Victorian flower dictionaries read red and white together as unity, which makes a red-and-white bouquet a lovely wedding or anniversary pick. Red-tipped yellow roses are often read as friendship turning into love.

Number of Roses Meaning

The count says something too, but this is a modern florist custom, not an old rule, and meanings change from shop to shop and country to country. These are the most common readings:

RosesPopular meaning
1Love at first sight, or "you are the one"
2Mutual love, "it's you and me"
3"I love you," one rose per word
6"I want to be yours"
9Eternal love, together forever
10"You are perfect"
11"You are my one true love"
12"Be mine," the classic dozen for romance or thanks
13A secret admirer
15"I'm sorry"
24"I'm yours, 24 hours a day"
50Love without conditions or limits
99"I will love you until the day I die"
100A hundred years of devotion
108"Will you marry me?" (popular in East Asia)

Tip: the color still matters more than the number. A dozen yellow roses is a big friendship hug, not a proposal.
