Name Numerology

Name numerology turns the letters of your name into numbers and reads the total as a set of traits. Your name gives three numbers: the name number, the soul urge and the personality number.

Below: both letter charts, a full worked example, what each result is said to mean, and an honest word on changing your name for luck.

Good to know

Numerology is a belief system, not a science. Use your name number as a talking point about yourself, not as a forecast.

Name Numerology in Short

Your name in three numbers

Every letter gets a number; add them up and reduce to one digit. Stop if you reach 11, 22 or 33.

  • Name number (expression or destiny): all the letters. Read as your natural talents.
  • Soul urge (heart's desire): only the vowels. Read as what you want deep down.
  • Personality number: only the consonants. Read as how others see you at first.
  • Two charts: Pythagorean (A to Z in order, 1 to 9) and Chaldean (by sound, 1 to 8 only).

Found your number? Tap to copy and share it.

  • My name adds up to more than my salary.
  • Checked my name number. Now I want a new name.
  • Same person, two charts, two numbers. Classic numerology.
  • My vowels say dreamer. My consonants say do not disturb.

The Three Name Numbers

All three come from the same name. The only difference is which letters you count.

NumberLetters usedWhat it is read as
Name number (expression, destiny)Every letterYour talents and the way you tend to use them
Soul urge (heart's desire)Vowels only (A, E, I, O, U, sometimes Y)Your inner wants and what makes you feel fulfilled
PersonalityConsonants onlyThe first impression you give

A handy check: soul urge plus personality always reduces to the same digit as the name number, because together they cover every letter.

Which Name Should You Use?

This depends on the system, and sources are split.

  • Pythagorean (Western): most numerologists use your full name as written at birth, first, middle and last, even if nobody calls you that.
  • Chaldean: many readers use the name you actually go by day to day, since the system is built on sound.

In India, a lot of people simply use the name on their school certificates or passport. Pick one version, note which one you used, and stick with it so your results are comparable.

Pythagorean Chart (Western)

The Pythagorean chart gives the letters 1 to 9 in alphabet order, then starts again. A is 1, I is 9, J is back to 1, and so on to Z, which is 8.

NumberLetters
1A, J, S
2B, K, T
3C, L, U
4D, M, V
5E, N, W
6F, O, X
7G, P, Y
8H, Q, Z
9I, R

Chaldean Chart

The Chaldean chart groups letters by their sound, not their place in the alphabet, and uses only 1 to 8. No letter gets 9, which this system treats as sacred. A total can still come to 9.

NumberLetters
1A, I, J, Q, Y
2B, K, R
3C, G, L, S
4D, M, T
5E, H, N, X
6U, V, W
7O, Z
8F, P

A few writers publish their own "improved" Chaldean charts that move some letters around. The table above is the version most Chaldean sources agree on. In Indian name numerology, this is the chart most often used, and the name number is usually compared with your mulank.

How to Calculate Your Name Number

  1. Write your name in capitals and pick one chart.
  2. Write the number under each letter.
  3. Add the numbers for each part of the name.
  4. Reduce by adding the digits until one digit is left. Keep 11, 22 or 33 if you reach them.

There are two ways to add, just like with a life path number. You can add every letter of the whole name in one go, or reduce each part (first name, surname) first and then add the parts. The final digit is the same either way; only master numbers can appear in one method and not the other.

Worked Example: ANJALI MEHTA

Here is one name worked out by hand with both charts.

With the Pythagorean Chart

LetterANJALI
Value151139

ANJALI: 1 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 3 + 9 = 20.

LetterMEHTA
Value45821

MEHTA: 4 + 5 + 8 + 2 + 1 = 20.

  • Name number: 20 + 20 = 40, and 4 + 0 = 4. (Parts first: 20 is 2, 20 is 2, and 2 + 2 = 4. Same answer.)
  • Soul urge (vowels): ANJALI has A, A, I = 1 + 1 + 9 = 11. MEHTA has E, A = 5 + 1 = 6. Then 11 + 6 = 17, and 1 + 7 = 8.
  • Personality (consonants): N, J, L = 5 + 1 + 3 = 9. M, H, T = 4 + 8 + 2 = 14. Then 9 + 14 = 23, and 2 + 3 = 5.
  • Check: 8 + 5 = 13, and 1 + 3 = 4. It matches the name number.

Notice the vowels of ANJALI make 11, a master number. Someone who reduces each name part first would keep that 11, but the final soul urge is still 8.

With the Chaldean Chart

LetterANJALI
Value151131

ANJALI: 1 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 3 + 1 = 12.

LetterMEHTA
Value45541

MEHTA: 4 + 5 + 5 + 4 + 1 = 19.

  • Name number: 12 + 19 = 31, and 3 + 1 = 4.

Here both charts happen to land on 4. That is luck of this name, not a rule. Change the letters and the two charts often disagree (the same name can be a 3 in one and a 6 in the other), which is one reason readings vary so much.

Chaldean readers also like to note the two-digit total before reducing (31 here), which they call a compound number and read on its own.

Is Y a Vowel or a Consonant?

Honest answer: numerologists do not agree, and it changes your soul urge and personality numbers (never your name number, which counts every letter).

  • The common rule: Y is a vowel when it makes the only vowel sound in its syllable, as in Lynn or Kylie. It is a consonant when it starts a syllable or sits next to another vowel that carries the sound, as in Yash, Maya or Priya.
  • Grey areas: names like Vinay or Sanjay, where Y joins an A sound. Some readers call that Y a vowel, others a consonant.
  • Calculators: many online tools just treat Y one fixed way, so two sites can give you two different soul urge numbers.

If your name has a Y, work it out both ways and read both results.

What Your Name Number Means

In numerology, the same number means roughly the same thing whether it comes from your name or your birth date. As a name number, it is read as the talents you bring; as a soul urge, what you crave; as a personality, how you come across.

Want to compare your name with your birth date? Your life path number comes from your full date of birth and is read as the main theme of your life, while the name number is read as the tools you carry.

Name Number, Soul Urge and Personality Together

The three numbers are read as a set, not one by one. Using ANJALI MEHTA from above (Pythagorean):

  • Name number 4: read as a steady, practical person who likes things done properly.
  • Soul urge 8: deep down, wants to achieve something solid and be respected for it.
  • Personality 5: comes across as lively, curious and easy to talk to.

A reader would say this person looks relaxed on the outside but is quietly driven inside. That is the kind of picture name numerology paints. It is broad on purpose, which is also why so many people feel it fits them.

Does Changing Your Name Change Your Luck?

In India especially, it is common to add a letter, double a letter or change a spelling so a name number matches a person's mulank. Baby names and shop names are sometimes chosen this way too.

To be plain about it: this is a belief, and there is no evidence that a spelling change affects luck, money, health or relationships. If you like a spelling, use it because you like it. Do not pay large fees for a "name correction" expecting a result, and never make a big life decision on a name number alone.

Is Name Numerology Real?

No, not in any scientific sense. There is no scientific evidence that the letters of a name shape a person's character or future. No controlled study has shown that people with the same name number share traits.

Two quick reasons for doubt: the Pythagorean and Chaldean charts often give the same name different numbers, and the Y rule changes results depending on who does the sum. The readings still feel true to many people because they are general enough to fit almost anyone, a well-known effect called the Barnum or Forer effect.

नाम से अंक कैसे निकालें (Name Numerology in Hindi)

1A, I, J, Q, Y
2B, K, R
3C, G, L, S
4D, M, T
5E, H, N, X
6U, V, W
7O, Z
8F, P

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my name number in numerology?
Write your full name, give each letter a number from the Pythagorean or Chaldean chart, add them all and reduce to one digit. Keep 11, 22 or 33 if you reach them. For example, ANJALI MEHTA is 40 in the Pythagorean chart, and 4 + 0 = 4.
What is the difference between expression, soul urge and personality numbers?
The expression (name) number uses every letter, the soul urge uses only the vowels, and the personality number uses only the consonants. Soul urge plus personality always reduces to the name number.
Which is better, Chaldean or Pythagorean numerology?
Neither has any proof behind it. Pythagorean is the most common online and uses your birth name; Chaldean is popular in India and uses the name you go by. Many people check both.
Should I use my birth name or my current name?
Pythagorean numerologists usually use your full birth name. Chaldean readers usually use the name you are known by now. Pick one, note it, and use it every time.
Is Y a vowel in numerology?
Sometimes. The common rule counts Y as a vowel when it is the only vowel sound in its syllable (Lynn) and as a consonant when it starts a syllable or sits next to another vowel (Yash, Priya). Sources disagree on names like Vinay, so try both.
What is the luckiest name number?
Numerology does not rank numbers as lucky or unlucky; each has its own strengths and challenges. Many sources call 11, 22 and 33 the most powerful, but that describes intensity, not luck.
Can changing the spelling of my name change my luck?
That is a belief with no scientific evidence behind it. A new spelling changes the number, not your life. Choose a spelling you like, and do not pay for a name change expecting a result.
Is name numerology accurate?
No. There is no scientific evidence that name numbers describe or predict anything. Readings feel accurate because they are broad enough to fit most people.
