A good prank ends with both of you laughing. Check these before you send anything.

1. Reveal fast. Within a few minutes, or the second they sound worried.
2. Never fake bad news. No fake accidents, hospital visits, deaths, breakups, pregnancy news, job loss or exam results.
3. Keep food out of it. Nothing in anyone's food or drink, ever. Allergies and upset stomachs are not funny.
4. Nothing that breaks or stains. If it can damage a phone, a laptop, clothes or a wall, skip it.

Why Is April 1 Called April Fool's Day? 📜

Nobody knows for sure how April Fool's Day began. A popular story says it started when France moved New Year's Day to 1 January, and people who still partied in late March and early April were called fools. Historians doubt it, because a Flemish poem from 1561 already shows a man sending his servant on silly errands on 1 April, before that calendar change.

In Britain, the writer John Aubrey called it "Fooles holy day" in 1686. In 1698, people were tricked into going to the Tower of London to watch the lions being washed. There were no lion baths.

The day looks a little different around the world:

• France, Italy and Belgium: children try to stick a paper fish on people's backs and shout "Poisson d'avril" (April fish).
• Scotland: it was known as Hunt the Gowk day. A gowk is a cuckoo, and the fool is sent from house to house on a pointless errand.
• UK: the noon rule. Pranks after midday turn back on the prankster.
• India: "April Fool" is used as it is, even in Hindi (अप्रैल फूल), and it is a big day for WhatsApp jokes among friends and school pranks.

One of the most famous April Fool pranks ever came from the BBC. On 1 April 1957, its news show Panorama aired a report about Swiss farmers harvesting spaghetti from trees, and viewers called in to ask how to grow their own.
